Chautauqua:

("sha- TAW- kwa") is an adult education movement highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s. The Chautauqua brought entertainment

and culture for the whole community, with speakers, teachers, musicians,

entertainers, artists,

preachers and specialists

of the day.

Born in Tacoma, WA in 1974, Foote, at the age of four, moved to southern Idaho where his parents started a ranch. Angus cattle and baseball were at the core of Foote's early days. Shawn would eventually move back to Tacoma in 1999, when he was hired as a Financial Advisor for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. With the highs and lows of the financial world, Foote found himself yearning to become the artist he had always wanted to be. He left the financial industry in 2005, moving to Pioneer Square, where he lived in his studio and created art for the next few years. Foote's studio was in Seattle's historic 619 Western Building and was a regular stop for many attending The Pioneer Square 1st Thursday Artwalk.

Now Foote's studio is in Tacoma, WA. He currently teaches art at an alternative high school in Spanaway. His body of work spans decades, inspired by nature, spirituality, current events and history. Foote's art often emerges out of a process, where ideas, experiments, and techniques culminate in pieces that gain a life of their own. Foote's work is grounded in material with resourcefulness and regular reflection being critical to the process. Curiosity, refined technique and patience allow his art to develop over time. In the end, art is a meditation and a means for self expression. A pathway to personal growth, Shawn likes to say, "My art is my alchemy."
